SETTING EXPECTATIONS
WHEN TREATING
IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY

Expectations of success
It is important clients recognise that, although seizure freedom is the ultimate goal when treating idiopathic epilepsy, it is not possible in most cases. Assuming seizure frequency is less than 1 every 6 weeks and there has been reduction in seizure severity, then a ≥50% reduction in seizures is a successful response to treatment.1 So, the most important outcome measure of a chronic medical condition such as epilepsy is quality of life.2
Expectations about adjustments
Clients should understand that treatment adjustment should be expected with all idiopathic epilepsy drugs. A high percentage of cases require adjustment of the treatment protocol to attain a successful response.1 See how to adjust the dose.
PEXION® has a very different safety profile to the usual standard of care treatment. Titrate up as needed to ensure optimal control of seizures. The dose can be increased up to 30 mg/kg twice daily if necessary and it can be stopped straight away if required.
When transition between different antiepileptic therapies is medically required, this should be done gradually and with appropriate clinical supervision.
Mild behavioural or muscular signs may be observed in dogs upon abrupt termination of treatment with imepitoin.
The effect of PEXION® treatment and dose adjustments
on patient outcomes*

PEXION® increases the threshold level to reduce seizure frequency at 10 mg/kg and eliminates seizures at 20 mg/kg

PEXION® increases the threshold level to reduce seizure frequency at 30 mg/kg
*The seizure threshold graph concepts were developed based on the findings discussed in Löscher et al.3
American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) panel recommendations of anti-epileptic drug use, monitoring, and risk profile showed that imepitoin, the active ingredient in PEXION®, has:
No unpredictable and potentially life-threatening adverse effects2
No evidence of hepatotoxicity or liver enzyme elevation2
No therapeutic drug monitoring required2
