Assess the frequency of seizures
Why?
If the dog has only had one seizure and is clinically and neurologically normal, and biochemistry is unremarkable, the seizure could be a one-off. If this is a generalised seizure the advice is to watch and wait for any further seizures before considering treatment, with an indication to return if further seizures occur. However, if there are severe postictal signs (or those lasting longer than 24hrs) or increasing seizure frequency and/or duration and/or seizure severity is deteriorating over two interictal periods, then treatment options should be carefully evaluated and you should consider speaking to one of our experts.
FREQUENCY OF SEIZURES
If the dog has only had one seizure and is clinically and neurologically normal, blood panel and urinalysis is unremarkable, the seizure could be a one-off. ACIVM recommends to watch and wait if the first seizure is of a controlled nature. However, if there are severe postictal signs, cluster seizures or status epilepticus then treatment options should be carefully evaluated and you should consider speaking to one of our experts.
